Hands On Charlotte Day has been the signature community service event of Hands On Charlotte since our 1991 founding.  Each year, hundreds of volunteers spend the day serving at several diverse projects across the city, ranging from sorting donated clothing and landscaping Charlotte schools to repairing nature trails.

The 2016 edition of Hands On Charlotte Day was held as part of our observation of National Volunteer Week, which has recognized our country’s volunteers for their vital contributions since 1974.

More than 200 volunteers worked on the following family-friendly service projects on HOC Day:

Family Volunteer Expo (MGLA at Marie G. Davis): Hands-on, family-friendly creative tasks to produce materials that benefit area nonprofit organizations (e.g., shopping bag jump ropes, paracord keychains, no-sew blankets, etc.)

Campus Beautification (MGLA at Marie G. Davis): Landscaping and maintenance tasks around the school campus

Campus Beautification (East Mecklenburg High School): Landscaping and maintenance tasks around the school campus

Food Donation Sorting (Second Harvest Food Bank): Inspecting, sorting, labeling and processing food donations

Clothing Donation Sorting (Crisis Assistance Ministry): Inspecting, sorting and processing donations of clothing and household goods

Doghouse Assembly for Holly’z Hope Rescue (East Mecklenburg High School): Building doghouses for use by a local dog rescue

Nature Center Trail and Facility Maintenance (Carolina Raptor Center): Maintenance of nature trails and grounds at nature center for birds of prey

Following the morning projects, volunteers joined us for lunch at our post-project Celebration of Service at VFW Post 9488, sharing stories about their projects, recognizing our volunteer leaders, and participating in raffle drawings for some very nice prizes!

Please check out this blog post for a recap of all of our National Volunteer Week commemorations.

If you enjoyed your HOC Day experience, you can spread that joy throughout the year by joining us as a registered HOC volunteer! We have 100-150 volunteer project occurrences posted each month on our online calendar, giving you the flexibility to give back on your own schedule.

Thanks again for making HOC Day 2016 a big success!

We'll post more details on HOC Day 2017 in the coming weeks. For now, be sure to save the date of April 29. We look forward to seeing you then!
