Teen Tutoring

Make an impact in the lives of teens- ages 10-18-by contributing to their educational success. the goal is to provide assistance to teens who have difficulty completing class assignments and to support them in a specific task. Tutoring is free and is provided in a safe and friendly environment. 

Tutoring is provided on a "one-on-one" basis and is "drop-in and appointments" style. Supplies will be provided for tutors, including calculators, paper, protractors, etc. 

Qualifications: Must complete a background check. Be patient and caring in manner. Must have previous experience or an interest in working with teens. Must be able to communicate clearly with Library staff and library users. Punctuality and reliability are a must. Should have experience in tutoring or teaching. Must also have subject mastery in a specific subject (Math, Science, Language Arts, etc.)

Desired Skills: 

  • Ability to work comfortably and effectively with teens
  • Prior experience tutoring or working with teens in an educational setting
  • Knowledge of specific subject areas (Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English)

Time Commitment: 2 hours/ week. Training will not be provided to tutors, but a brief orientation will be given before starting. Potential volunteers will need to complete a background check before starting. In addition, potential volunteers will need to attend a brief interview with library staff prior to being selected for tutoring. 

Time Frame: September 5th- May 31st (approx.) (example: one month, 6 months, 1 year), 2 hours a week minimum commitment is required for a semester (4 months).

Days/Hours Preferred: Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30 P.M-7:30 P.M.

As Volunteers: As a volunteer, you will acquire new skills and gain recognized work experience. You will have the ability to work 1-on-1 with a teen to help them gain confidence and strengthen their skills in a subject that will reduce any barriers to their overall understanding. Lastly, as a volunteer, you will contribute to the success of your public library by building confidence in a teen that may be struggling or who needs additional help.
