STEP ONE: Register on our web site.
STEP TWO: Sign Up for a New Volunteer Orientation session.
We offer New Volunteer Orientation sessions at the HOC Office several times a month, at a variety of times (evenings, weekdays and weekends).
STEP THREE: Pay the one-time $20 Engagement Fee

You can pay the engagement fee by check or cash at the orientation session or online through Pay Pal or a credit card.
Engagement Fee Discount/Waiver
We offer a discount to those seeking employment, full-time students, active military, active AmeriCorps members or those on disability. We offer an engagement fee waiver to volunteers for the Mecklenburg County Skills Based program.

- Volunteers under age 18 must volunteer with a parent. Please see our Families program for more details.
- WE DO NOT MANAGE COURT-ORDERED VOLUNTEERS
- All volunteers 18 and over must be able to volunteer on their own without constant supervision; therefore are projects are not ideal for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

STEP FOUR: We process background checks AFTER you complete the orientation. Once your background check has been cleared you can sign up for any project posted on our website.
